Princess Diana Sent This Raunchy Note 20 Years Ago, And It’s Now Going Up For Auction

Princess Diana always appeared to be the definition of class, but a greeting card from the late royal that is going up for auction paints a slightly different image of the princess. The Daily Mail UK shared an image of the birthday card with a “bawdy joke” that she sent to her accountant, of all people. It seems that Diana had a wicked fun sense of humor!

The card was believed to have been sent in the nineties, but recently surfaced at the celebrity auction site Julien’s Auctions after the anonymous owner decided to sell it. Diana sent it to her friend, accountant Anthony Burrows.

On the front of the card is a cartoon of Sleeping Beauty in bed by a window with the caption: “A little prick in the hand sent Sleeping Beauty to sleep,” a reference to the spinning wheel that sent her into a deep sleep.

Inside of the card lies the punchline, which reads: “Only the big ones are worth staying awake for!” Diana personally signed it to “Tony,” writing: “A belated Happy Birthday for the 5th! From Diana.”

The card is estimated be sold at between $800 — $1,200, with the current online bidding standing at $250. According to the auction item description, the card is 7 by 5 inches, and reads: “A humorous birthday card with ‘Sleeping Beauty’ on the cover, handwritten in black felt pen by HRH Princess Diana, ‘Tony, A belated Happy Birthday for the 5th, from, Diana.’”

The owner of the card told The Mirror: “I know that Diana liked to send humorous cards, but I haven’t seen any quite this naughty, so for me it really shows that she was a fun human being that could share some dirty jokes with her closest friends.”

They added: “This is a secret card that has been kept hidden for many years. A true gem for anyone that is a fan of this special human being.”

Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, remarked how Diana liked a good joke or prank, telling The Mirror recently: “She’d spend hours looking for jokey things for their [kids] stockings. One year, Harry got fake dog poo.”

Among the many comments left on the Daily Mail’s coverage of this unique auction item were those who found Diana’s sense of humor quite amusing. One commenter noted: “She was so relatable. The people’s princess, for people everywhere, through and through. One of us.”

Another commenter imagined what it might have been like to have seen her looking for this card at a store, as they noted: “It’s funny to picture her at the shop, perusing the greeting cards for something like this! Couldnt happen these days.”

Not everyone, however, found Diana’s choice of cards amusing, as one commenter remarked: “Not funny at all. I just don’t understand why people like any form of comedy that is rude and crude.”

On social media though, there was plenty of love for the late Diana with comments such as: “She was a real princess, a beautiful soul with a great sense of humor.”
